With New Year’s just around the corner, it’s the time everyone focuses on new beginnings, resolutions, and goals, as we are looking back on the year that passed. The past year for me brought a lot of changes and new experiences that I wouldn’t have expected. And in this article, I will share with you why I chose to participate in a European Solidarity Corps program, and why you should do the same.
The beginning of last year found me very uncertain about my next steps, as I didn’t know which direction I wanted to go in, and what I wanted to do after university. As I had been thinking of doing an ESC project for quite some time, I thought this was the perfect moment to start searching for the right opportunity for me. Now, as I am almost 3 months into my project, I can talk about all the things this experience can offer to you and all the things I’m excited to learn and discover in the new year.
Firstly, moving to a new country, to work and live by yourself, can push you outside your comfort zone and help you grow in a lot of ways. You will get the chance to meet new people and to connect with them through sharing a common experience. Through that, you will learn about new cultures and lifestyles, and open up your mind in many ways. Also, while working everyday with locals on improving their community, you will get to immerse yourself more and more into their culture, learn about their way of life, and even learn a new language.
Through your work, during your project, you will gain work experience in new fields, develop new skills and attributes. It can be the perfect chance to explore a new and different field of work. That can lead to many new opportunities in the future, whether you discover something you love and want to follow further, or just discover new parts of your personality and skills you didn’t know you had.
This experience will also bring challenges, some of which will be new and unexpected. That can help you learn to deal with new things, overcome obstacles and find new ways to accomplish the things you want, making you more adaptable and ready for what’s to come. You can open up more and connect with new people that come from very different backgrounds to you, or who don’t even speak the same language as you.
Finally, whether this is your first international experience or not, you understand more of what it is like to live by yourself, to depend on yourself and discover your strengths and limits. Your personality will evolve, your comfort zone will expand, and you will find new interests and passions that you can explore more in the future. An ESC experience can gift you with so many things that, in the end, it will always be the right choice.
So, if you are looking at ESC projects and your fears are holding you back, maybe this article can be the push you were looking for and the inspiration for the beginning of a new adventure.
El nuevo año se está acercando y es el momento de concentrarse en los nuevos inicios, objetivos y resoluciones mientras miramos al año que está terminando. En este año he vivido muchas experiencias nuevas que no me podía ni imaginar, por esa razón quiero contar por qué elegí participar en un proyecto de voluntariado en el Cuerpo Europeo de Solidaridad y por qué todes deberían hacer lo mismo.
Al principio del año no estaba muy segura de lo que quería hacer después de haber terminado la universidad. Llevaba ya un tiempo pensando en hacer un voluntariado y pensé que este era el momento perfecto para empezar a buscar entre todas las oportunidades. Ahora, que llevo tres meses en el proyecto puedo hablar sobre lo que te ofrece esta experiencia y todas las cosas que quiero y espero aprender durante el nuevo año.
Primero, mudarse a otro país, para trabajar y vivir solo, te da la oportunidad de salir de tu zona de confort y te ayuda a crecer. Tienes la oportunidad de conocer a mucha gente nueva y conectar con ellxs compartiendo la misma experiencia. Gracias a todo eso podrás aprender mucho más sobre nuevas culturas y estilos de vida y así abrir la mente. Trabajando todos los días con personas locales y mejorando la comunidad, podrás entender sus culturas y aprender otro idioma.
Gracias al trabajo diario podrás conseguir experiencia laboral en un nuevo campo y desarrollar nuevas capacidades. También es una oportunidad para explorar un campo laboral nuevo que te puede llevar a nuevas oportunidades, si descubres algo en el que te gustaría trabajar o de ti mismo y tus capacidades que no sabías antes.
Ese tipo de experiencia lleva también nuevos retos, algunos inesperados. Aprenderás a enfrentarte con nuevas cosas, superar obstáculos y encontrar nuevas formas de alcanzar tus objetivos, adaptándote a nuevas situaciones.
Al final, sea tu primera experiencia en el extranjero o no, entenderás mucho más sobre cómo vivir solo, contar contigo mismo y descubrir tus fuerzas y también debilidades. Desarrollarás tu personalidad, extenderás tu zona de confort y encontrarás nuevas pasiones.
Una experiencia de voluntariado puede regalarte mucho, y al final será la mejor decisión.
